Material selection begins with service conditions
Duplex stainless material family for higher strength and chloride-service components. Final grade selection should be based on the governing cast or wrought specification, environment, temperature, required properties, weld or repair restrictions and downstream heat treatment.
Cast and wrought designation
“2205” is commonly used as a duplex family shorthand. For cast pressure or corrosion-service components, ASTM A890 / A995 Grade 4A (CD3MN) is a common cast designation; wrought 2205 is controlled by different product specifications. The RFQ should state the required cast grade and governing standard explicitly.
Manufacturing considerations
The alloy affects melting practice, shell interaction, heat treatment, machining behavior, distortion risk and surface-treatment compatibility. These factors are reviewed together before quotation.

- Exact grade and governing ASTM, EN or customer specification
- Required heat-treatment condition
- Mechanical-property, corrosion or ferrite requirements
- NDT and material-test requirements
- Repair restrictions
- Certification and traceability documents
Avoid substitution by name alone
Cast and wrought designations, national standards and customer specifications are not always interchangeable. The purchase order and drawing should identify the controlling material standard rather than relying only on a familiar commercial name.
