Austenitic stainless steel

304 / CF8 Stainless Steel

Material and process route reviewed together for casting, machining, heat treatment and verification.

Material selection begins with service conditions

General corrosion-resistant stainless casting for industrial and sanitary component families. Final grade selection should be based on the governing specification, environment, temperature, required properties, weld or repair restrictions and downstream heat treatment.

Cast and wrought designation

CF8 is an austenitic stainless casting grade commonly cross-referenced with the 304 family. The cast grade is controlled by its applicable casting specification (for example ASTM A351 / A743 / A744, as applicable to the project); wrought 304 is controlled by different product standards. Use the family name for orientation, not as an automatic material substitution.

Manufacturing considerations

The alloy affects melting practice, shell interaction, heat treatment, machining behavior, distortion risk and surface-treatment compatibility. These factors are reviewed together before quotation.

Information to include in the RFQ

  • Exact grade and governing ASTM, EN or customer specification
  • Required heat-treatment condition
  • Mechanical-property, corrosion or ferrite requirements
  • NDT and material-test requirements
  • Repair restrictions
  • Certification and traceability documents

Avoid substitution by name alone

Cast and wrought designations, national standards and customer specifications are not always interchangeable. The purchase order and drawing should identify the controlling material standard rather than relying only on a familiar commercial name.

Start with the drawing

Send the alloy, annual quantity and critical requirements.

Email is the fastest route for drawings and 3D files. The short form is available when email is inconvenient.

For the fastest drawing review, include:
  • 2D drawing / 3D file and revision
  • Material grade or service environment
  • Annual quantity or expected lot size
  • Critical tolerances, finish, inspection or pressure-test requirements
