Where 17-4 PH fits
17-4 PH is selected when an austenitic stainless grade does not provide enough strength but the application still needs useful corrosion resistance. For casting programs, the design review should treat material grade and heat-treatment condition as one requirement because the final properties depend strongly on the thermal cycle.
Cast grade and heat-treatment condition
For cast projects, CB7Cu-1 under ASTM A747 is a common precipitation-hardening stainless casting designation associated with the 17-4 PH family. Wrought 17-4 PH uses different product specifications. The RFQ should identify the controlling cast specification and the required heat-treatment condition rather than use “17-4 PH” alone.
Machining and finishing implications
Machining sequence, distortion control and dimensional verification should be planned around heat treatment. Critical bores, sealing faces or datum features may need final machining after the specified thermal cycle. Passivation, surface-finish requirements and any repair restrictions should also be stated before quotation.

- Cast grade and governing ASTM, EN or customer specification
- Required heat-treatment or aging condition
- Mechanical-property and hardness requirements
- Critical dimensions that must be finished after heat treatment
- NDT, material testing and repair restrictions
- Certification and traceability documents
A familiar alloy name is useful for orientation, but the purchase order should control the actual cast grade, condition and acceptance criteria.
