Material selection begins with service conditions
Precipitation-hardening stainless alloy for components combining corrosion resistance and strength. Final grade selection should be based on the governing specification, environment, temperature, required properties, weld or repair restrictions and downstream heat treatment.
Cast and wrought designation
For cast projects, CB7Cu-1 under ASTM A747 is a common precipitation-hardening stainless casting designation associated with the 17-4 PH family. Wrought 17-4 PH uses different product specifications. Treat the familiar family name as a starting point, not as a substitute for the governing cast or wrought standard.
Manufacturing considerations
The alloy affects melting practice, shell interaction, heat treatment, machining behavior, distortion risk and surface-treatment compatibility. These factors are reviewed together before quotation.

- Exact grade and governing ASTM, EN or customer specification
- Required heat-treatment condition
- Mechanical-property, corrosion or ferrite requirements
- NDT and material-test requirements
- Repair restrictions
- Certification and traceability documents
Avoid substitution by name alone
Cast and wrought designations, national standards and customer specifications are not always interchangeable. The purchase order and drawing should identify the controlling material standard rather than relying only on a familiar commercial name.
