Low-carbon austenitic stainless

304L / CF3 Stainless Steel

CF3 is the low-carbon austenitic cast grade commonly associated with 304L service requirements; final selection follows the controlling casting standard.

Why 304L / CF3 is specified

CF3 is a low-carbon austenitic stainless casting grade used where corrosion resistance, weldability or reduced sensitization risk matters. It is commonly discussed alongside wrought 304L, but the cast and wrought specifications are not identical.

Common cross-references

  • ASTM cast designation: CF3 under applicable A351 / A743 / A744 specifications
  • EN cast reference: 1.4309 / GX2CrNi19-11
  • Common wrought 304L references: 1.4307 and 1.4306

Manufacturing review

Casting geometry, solution treatment, machining stock, welding/repair restrictions, ferrite or corrosion requirements and final inspection should be reviewed together. For pressure-containing service, specify the governing pressure-casting standard on the RFQ.

RFQ information

Provide the exact standard, required condition, mechanical/corrosion requirements, NDT, repair restrictions and material-certificate requirements. Do not substitute CF3 and 304L by name alone.
