Material selection begins with service conditions
Low-carbon stainless casting for corrosion-resistant and weld-sensitive applications. Final grade selection should be based on the governing specification, environment, temperature, required properties, weld or repair restrictions and downstream heat treatment.
Cast and wrought designation
CF3M is a low-carbon molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless casting grade commonly associated with the 316L family. It is not an automatic substitute for wrought 316L; the governing casting specification and required heat treatment and properties control the purchase.
Manufacturing considerations
The alloy affects melting practice, shell interaction, heat treatment, machining behavior, distortion risk and surface-treatment compatibility. These factors are reviewed together before quotation.
Information to include in the RFQ
- Exact grade and governing ASTM, EN or customer specification
- Required heat-treatment condition
- Mechanical-property, corrosion or ferrite requirements
- NDT and material-test requirements
- Repair restrictions
- Certification and traceability documents
Avoid substitution by name alone
Cast and wrought designations, national standards and customer specifications are not always interchangeable. The purchase order and drawing should identify the controlling material standard rather than relying only on a familiar commercial name.
