Material selection begins with service conditions
Molybdenum-bearing stainless casting for more demanding corrosion and process environments. Final grade selection should be based on the governing specification, environment, temperature, required properties, weld or repair restrictions and downstream heat treatment.
Cast and wrought designation
CF8M is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless casting grade commonly cross-referenced with the 316 family. The cast grade and wrought 316 have different product specifications and acceptance requirements, so the RFQ should state the governing casting standard rather than rely on the family name alone.
Manufacturing considerations
The alloy affects melting practice, shell interaction, heat treatment, machining behavior, distortion risk and surface-treatment compatibility. These factors are reviewed together before quotation.
Information to include in the RFQ
- Exact grade and governing ASTM, EN or customer specification
- Required heat-treatment condition
- Mechanical-property, corrosion or ferrite requirements
- NDT and material-test requirements
- Repair restrictions
- Certification and traceability documents
Avoid substitution by name alone
Cast and wrought designations, national standards and customer specifications are not always interchangeable. The purchase order and drawing should identify the controlling material standard rather than relying only on a familiar commercial name.
